Our Objective
Mut home pharmacy is designed to improve and extend health care knowledge about medicines to Residential Age care and disability homes, people’s homes, and hospital facilities. This is achieved through our programs of creating medication awareness and educating clinical staff, customers who live in their homes, carers, families, and friends. This will ultimately reduce the number of hospitalization and emergency attendances.
“The years I spent working in the Age care and disability sector, I noticed how carers and RN’s every so often would ring up emergency services”. Normally, these would be symptoms associated with the side effects of their medicines and would include;- sweating after taking medication/shiver/cough /itching, or develop urinary incontinence all of a sudden after medication administration. It’s only now after I have spent time studying pharmacy that I look back and realise that most of those symptoms were linked to medication. Without this knowledge, carers and RNs would constantly burden the health care system by calling emergency services for cases that could easily be managed.
“Usually this would happen any time of the day but most especially at night”. So, patients had to go to hospitals and by the time doctors got results from their blood samples, it would be after a day or a few hours. Patients had to be admitted into the emergency for a couple of hours or even days while the doctors are waiting for blood samples. This whole experience does not only cause trauma to these vulnerable patients but it is also associated with a huge financial burden on the health care system of our country. Being Immunol compromised, these hospital stays even if they are for a few hours are putting these patients at risk of HAI (Hospital Acquired Infections).
This situation also causes some impact on family members and friends, “Normally, family members or friends have to be notified when their loved ones go to the hospital with an emergency, most of the time those family members have to cancel work or reschedule things to go and be at the hospital with their loved ones”. This why it is important for Mut Home pharmacy to reach out to all these centers and homes and educate RN’s, Carers, Family members, and general people on some of these effects associated with medicine.
